Mayudama Kazari
In the old days, Nagaoka was famous for sericulture. At the beginning of the year, each household made original Mayudama Kazari, hanging cocoon ornaments, and prayed for a year of abundance. In these years, you can see these colorful ornaments at the exhibition called Mayudama no sato and it is the seasonal tradition of early spring at Nagaoka.

Nuebarai Festival
Nue is a mythical monster with the head of a lion, body of a tiger, and tail of a snake. This festival was first organized by the historical figure Minamoto-no-Yoritomo. As a part of festival, local junior high school students will perform the Nue dance and certain street markets are opened.

Cherry Blossom

Firefly Festival
In the early summer evenings, fireflies are a common sight at the Kosaka-shimizuike Park. In addition, the night market is held around here.

Genji Ayame Festival
Mrs. Ayame, who was Minamoto-no Yorimasa’s concubine and lived in the imperial court, was from Nagaoka. After Minamoto-no Yorimasa was defeated in the historical battle against the Taira clan, Mrs. Ayame returned to Kona in Nagaoka to be a nun. Parades and shows by geisha are included in the festival at Nagaoka to commemorate Mrs. Ayame.

Firework Festival
A three-day firework festival is held along the Kanogawa River. The last day of this festival, August 4, is called Nagaoka sengoku firework festival, and the celebrations have a Japanese provincial war theme. The beautiful fireworks attract scores of people every year.

Cycling event at Kanogawa
This event includes an enjoyable cycling round trip covering 100 km between Kanogawa River and Numazu. The trip is not a race, so you can ride the bicycle at your own pace. There is a 50-km course for beginners as well.

Autumn leaves
With the onset of the warm climate in Izu, the foliage season starts at the end of November. The grass and trees along the Karinogawa riverside turn golden in color; also, the garden at Egawatei is famous for its beautifully colored leaves. If you make a little side trip to Shuzenji, you could visit the “Autumn Leaves Festival”.
